Donington was built in 1931 for motor-cycle events and then staged numerous Grand Prix races and other international events in 1935 - 1938. Closed during the second World War, the circuit was resurrected in the 1970's by entrepeneur Wheatcroft and re-openend in 1977.
Its long and glorious history was crowned when it was chosen to host the European Grand Prix in 1993. The long circuit is very fast in parts and the descent through the Craner Curves to the Old Hairpin has to be one of the most formidable sections of track in the UK. The newer Melborne Loop, added in 1985, imposes heavy strains on brakes and transmitions, and breaks up the track's otherwise flowing nature.
Set in and around a natural amphitheatre, viewing facilities for spectators are excellent, and the track's layout affords many overtaking opportunities, a rarity today. Donington Park is arguably the prettiest circuit in Britain, and the adjacent Museum housing the Donington Collection of historic racing cars should not be missed.
